The Next Morning…

Rolling over in the bed, I didn’t see Spencer next to me, so I got up, went to the bathroom, then handled my hygiene. I walked out the room, headed down the stairs, when suddenly, I heard voices. Listening, I noticed it was Spencer and his mom talking, so I kept walking ’til I heard my name.

“Son, I am proud of you for taking this big step and moving on, but I still want you to take your time. Don’t rush things with Devin. She has to heal from her breakup.”

“Mom, look. We are moving at our own pace, but I do think she is over her husband. Although he may have hurt her when he cheated and had a whole family on her, she is ready to move on from her past with that nigga.”

“Ok, son. Just be careful. I don’t want you to get hurt the first time you even get back into a relationship.”

I kept walking toward them. When I entered the front room, he and his mom were sitting on the couch. They turned toward me when they noticed my presence. Smiling at both of them, I took a seat on the opposite side of them.

“Good morning, Mrs. Ashford and Spencer.

“Well, good morning to you too, sweetheart. How are you doing today?” his mom asked.

“I’m doing pretty well. So, I was thinking that I could get you and your husband to come over tonight. I want to have dinner with you two and my parents—if you don’t mind, that is.”

“I don’t mind at all. We will be here. What time do you want us here?”

“How about five?”

“Perfect. I will let you two get ready for tonight, and I will see y’all later. Lil’ Spencer, come tell Grandma bye, baby.”

Lil’ Spencer came running into the living room to say his goodbyes to his grandma. She kissed his cheek then was out the door. Lil’ Spencer came and crawled in my lap and was talking my ear off about Paw Patrol. I glanced over at Spencer, and he looked shocked that Lil’ Spencer crawled in my lap, I guess.

“Damn, he ain't never just crawled in anyone's lap like this. He likes you. I can tell.”

“I would hope so, but kids love me anyway. I'm gonna text my parents and get them to come over for dinner.”

“A’ight, love. Me and Lil’ Spencer ’bout to go put up all this new stuff his grandma bought him this weekend.”

He picked Lil’ Spencer up, and they headed up the stairs.

While they were upstairs, I picked up my phone and sent a group chat to my parents. All three of them agreed to come over for dinner tonight. My parents still got along now that they weren’t married.

Getting up, I walked up the stairs and went toward where I heard Spencer and Lil’ Spencer talking. Standing at the side, where they couldn’t see me, I listened to what they were saying.

“So, Lil’ Spencer, how do you like Devin?”

“Her is cute, Daddy. I like her.
